"Those who look with only eye
to science will miss it,
for true medicine is in the space
between the breath,
true medicine is in the instant
between heart beats."
Laura Secord, from "Mojo and Medicine"
Dr Lewis Mehl Madona states "Relationships are the key to healing...Healing grows out of a change in the patient's relationship to his or her self, or it grows through a relationship with the healer. A variety of tools- drugs and surgery among them- can be used to support a healing relationship, but the relationship is more critical than any tool."
Laura Secord's bases her innovative lecture Mojo and Medicine: Stories and Poems from 25 Years in Health Care on this belief. In her evocative style she tells the story of her experiences as a Nurse Practitioner and health care activist through the use poetry, prose, and performance based monologues. This lecture has been delivered to HIV awareness organizations, and Schools of Nursing and Social Work throughout the southeast.
